Can you translate that for me?
- Evangelical—This word is often misunderstood, even by Americans! This word comes from the Greek word evangel, a Bible word for gospel or the good news of Jesus Christ. Christians have good news to share with others in a world filled with bad news.
Some people think that Christians try to impose their beliefs on other people. But Christianity is simply the good news that God has entered into history for us. Like any news report, you don’t have to believe until you research the facts. But what if God did come to make this world right and new? That would be exciting! Who could resist telling others?
- Hospitality—This word is another Bible word that means love for strangers. This is something different than entertaining. Rather than build a fancy reputation for your host, hospitality meets your needs as a guest. A related word, hospital, adds the ideas of safety, care, and healing.
To welcome others into your home is a sacred obligation in many world cultures. Sadly, many international scholars tell us that they have never been invited into an American home. For Christians, hospitality is the heart of the gospel. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, meets our deepest needs. He transforms us from strangers into friends. God invites everyone to come into his house (heaven) to be welcomed and treated as a royal family. In fact, one of the symbols of the gospel is a shared meal. We want our welcoming events to reflect heaven!
